National Park Drents-Friese Wold is in size the second largest nature reserve in The Netherlands.
Besides forest the Drents-Friese Wold is primarily known for its Kale Duinen, or as it's also called the Aekingerzand. This shifting sand area is large enough to give the wind the chance to really let the sand shift.
With the help of grazing herds this area is kept free of grass and trees.
Besides shifting dunes there are large forest areas and wide moors.
National Park Drents Friese-Wold is an excellent area for short and long hiking and cycling trips. There are several marked hiking routes and for cycling there is the Dutch version of the National Cycle Network.
For geocachers there are some nice caches to be found.
